Debee Holland-Olson was born and raised in California with artistic abilities noted early in her life. Working full time in visual arts, she owns and operates a studio in Weaverville, California. Debee spent two years studying art at Shasta College ('72-'73) AA, Redding, CA with emphasis in illustration, painting, and art history. She transferred to California State University, Chico ('73-'76), and continued her studies in the Fine Art Department. Debee received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree concentrating on illustration, painting and printmaking. She began her post-graduate work through the Humboldt State University Art Department ("78-"80).
Holland-Olson personal works are almost exclusively in pastel/dry pigment and oil, and has been for quite some time. Her work in illustration and painting has been noted by collectors as a very personal interpretation from the artist's insight within the views she portrays. On site illustrations accompany her larger works in pastel and oil for exhibition. Holland-Olson has a gift for capturing intimate glimpses of her environment. Her major emphasis in her paintings is on value and atmospheric perspective. "I like to create depth in a painting, to visually take the viewer into the scene". Holland-Olson's paintings have a feeling of comfortable familiarity and peace. Partly that may be true due to the vanishing rural landscape and habitat areas she paints, but it is not achieved by accident. "I want my paintings to be a refuge", she said, "they are a refuge for me."
Her works are in collections of private patrons and corporate foundations nationally. Conservation of open land and wetlands has been of a personal interest and passion for the artist as she participates with Land Trust Events in Shasta, Mendocino, Humboldt and Del Norte counties of Northern California. Holland-Olson has participated in the Artist in Residence programs within the National Parks and the California Arts Council. She enjoys Plein Air Paint outs for various organizations.
