The Snyder/Highland Foundation, a nonprofit corporation, was established in 1968 by local businessman Gilman Snyder and his wife Lucille. Their goal was to encourage and nurture the expression of creative talent in all the arts throughout Trinity County and northern California. That year they purchased the historic Jackson family home, originally built in 1893, along with surrounding land and outbuildings, as the permanent home of the Highland Art Center.
Spaces in the main building, as well as outlying structures that once were barns, are now used as galleries, artists’ studios and workshop space.
The Highland Art Center presents a new show of local and regional art each month throughout the year in the Main and East Galleries. There is also a large collection of members’ art including paintings, jewelry, ceramics, woodworking, sculpture, mixed media, cards and prints on display and available for purchase.
The Foundation also actively supports the future of the arts by sponsoring scholarships for graduates of Trinity County high schools who intend to pursue art-related careers. In addition, it helps fund special creative projects in the schools, such as murals and the biennial student show, The Trinity County Young Artists Showcase.
The Highland Art Center Meadow adjacent to the main building is made available without charge for community events throughout the year. The Art Center sponsors a July 4th Arts and Crafts Fair in the Meadow providing an opportunity for artists and crafts-people to sell their handmade wares. Live music and food booths round out the day’s entertainment.
Visitors are invited to explore the home and gardens. We hope you will enjoy the unique charm of this gift to the present from the past.
